New parents face many problems and issues that they are expected to understand and deal with immediately. Unfortunately, newborns do not come with an instruction book so here are a few topics that you may need to know about.

Giving your baby a bath: Although this sounds archaic almost, the baby’s umbilical cord is still attached when you take it home and until it comes off within the first two weeks you can only give your baby sponge baths. You should use a cotton swab and lightly dab at your baby around the umbilical. Use clean water and lightly clean the area – do not be alarmed by the dried blood, this is completely natural.

Leaving the hospital: when you leave the hospital with your newborn baby you will want to make sure they are wrapped up nice and snug. Obviously you do this for the baby’s comfort first and foremost but this is also to protect them from the elements like the sun and to keep them warm – new babies are not able to keep themselves as warm as you and I. If you are not carrying your child then I highly recommend looking at the Maclaren strollers range as they are the most highly respected brand and safety must come first with your baby.

Circumcision: Circumcising the baby is sometimes not a choice that you make but dealing with it something that some new parents may find hard. But this is something that should not. The reasons for circumcision are to erase nearly all chances of penile cancer and reduce risk of urinary tract infection, so it is only a good thing.

Crib death (SIDS): Many studies have been done regarding SIDS. Although the cause of SIDS has not been definitely defined, there are some correlations that have been made between SIDS and the following things:

Utilizing the safety of Maclaren Strollers for your new baby will be the safest and most enjoyable way to get to and from the hospital – or anywhere for that matter

Premature babies are more likely to suffer from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, but SIDS is rapidly on the decrease due to the measures we have learned to take

The Umbilical cord is still attached for the first couple of weeks and so remember as discussed, that although the bathing process is one that should encourage the bond between mother and child, whilst the umbilical is attached extra care needs to be taken

Enjoy the time with your baby. All the seriousness that comes with being a new parent can often overshadow what is really important, and most important of all is to take the time to enjoy your new baby

Babies who occupy a home with a smoker are more likely to affected by sleeping conditions including SIDS. There are so many health risks associated with smoking, but on the subject of SIDS, if this isn’t motivation enough to stop, then nothing is.

Some people say that sleeping with your baby can reduce the risk of SIDS, but the American Academy of Pediatrics disagree with this statement and go on to say that there is a greater risk of SIDS in babies who co-sleep. I also don;t recommend it on the basis that it is just another bad habit that you will eventually have to break.

Sleeping your baby on their back is the best way to reduce the risk of SIDS but If you have concerns, talk to your pediatrician.
